Sewage Waste
The Issue:
Deer Island Waste Water Treatment Facility
- Sewage water creates many forms of harmful bacteria that can make life harmful for humans and animals in certain spots.
- Toxins from sewage often leak into bodies of water and contaminate.
- There is often methane gas build up in sewers that are extremely toxic.
-Sometimes, sewage can overflow from toilets, bringing the sewage to the house
- The city of Boston and the spots around it do a good job at keeping sewage out of the house and away from drinking water.
- After having the dirtiest harbor in the country for years, the city stopped dumping sewage directly into the harbor in 1991.
- The Deer Island Wastewater Treatment Plant takes sewage waste from throughout the city and treats it to create safe water to dump.
- At the facility, 10 billion gallons of waste water are processed each year since it's establishment in 2000.
- At it's peak performance, Deer Island treats 848 million gallons per day, with an average of 343 million gallons per day.
- Deer Island is responsible for the treatment of waste water from 43 greater Boston communities and their residents.
- Since as far back as the 1800s, Boston has put forward a massive effort in order to eliminate the sewage waste issue.
- The city has put forth a legitimate effort all around in order to control the waste water problem.
